Have you ever killed someone
Have you ever let someone go
The kids round here play “have you ever”
To them I say “maybe I have”
Well my father he got old
And then one day he said no more
He said no more eating — oh, except for ice cream
We made a choice and we let him go
Now it don’t matter who you are
And it don’t matter what you’ve done
When there’s no more doing, there’s only knowing
And what you know will take its aim at you
There’s a path you follow to your fate
And even now I still walk that way
In all these years I’ve never found it
But I hope that one day I will
You know there ain’t no road from here to the sun
Nor is there any road from here to hell
There’s just a road and it bears the burden
Of all its travelers of which I’m one
So have you ever killed someone
Have you ever had to let them go
The kids round here play “have you ever”
To them I say “well maybe I have”
